Downstream from Platforms and Screens, Transmedia is the solution to releasing the same story and characters on multiple platforms simultaneously.
We’re paying a lot more attention to strategically spreading our stories out to all of the platforms and screens right from the beginning – allowing room in the immersive world that we’re building for future storylines, future characters. What it took the Star Trek franchise 40 years to build (and still building), content creators are thinking about from day one – now that we are living in a platforms and screens world.
But there’s another side to Transmedia. Something beyond the coordinated propagation of stories and characters to multiple platforms. When Henry Jenkins talks about Transmedia in his 2006 book Convergence Culture, he is most of all talking about a new relationship between the storyteller and the audience. In this relationship, the audience has the unprecedented ability to participate in the ongoing creation of the Transmedia storytelling process.
In a Transmedia world, the author or creator can have a direct one-on-one relationship with each and every member of their audience.
